Jamaica’s fast rising star, the undefeated featherweight boxer, Nicholas Walters made another successful defence of his World Boxing Association FedeLatin title on June 16 with a technical knockout victory over Mexican Argel Salinas.

The fight took place at the Karl Hendrickson Auditorium at Jamaica College and was the first fight for Walters in Jamaica since he became a professional on August 2, 2008.

The referee stopped the 11-round bout at 2 minutes and 4 seconds of the second round. As a result of the victory, Walters has now improved his ring record to 18 victories including 14 knockouts.

Walters won the vacant FedeLatin featherweight title two years ago after he rebounded from an eighth-round knockout to defeat the Dominican Republic’s Carlos Manuel Reyes on points.

Now, eyes are on Jamaican-born female boxer Alicia Ashley, who was named among the nominees in the 2011 RJR Sports Foundation National Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year. Ashley, who was born in Jamaica, is the current WBC female world super bantamweight champion. She won the title in a unanimous decision in a bout against Christina Ruiz in New York, USA.

And Jamaica’s popular middleweight Sakima Mullings won the vacant Commonwealth Zonal middleweight title also on that night. He knocked out Winston Pompey of Guyana in the second round.
