Profile of Trelawny

Population

76,000 (ESSJ 2010)

INTRODUCTION

The parish of Trelawny is developing rapidly, with the opening of the largest shipping pier in the Caribbean, new attractions, educational institutions housing solutions, and businesses.

The sleepy, historic town of Falmouth in Trelawny recently came alive with the opening of Jamaica’s most modern port, the Falmouth Cruise Ship Pier. Constructed at a cost of US$220 million, the pier represents a significant investment in Jamaican tourism and in Trelawny in particular. The facility has already seen the visit of the largest cruise ship vessel, the Oasis of the Seas, which made its maiden visit to the pier carrying approximately 6,000 cruise ship passengers.  Falmouth has also welcomed the Voyager of the Seas, which made its inaugural visit to the Falmouth Cruise Ship Pier on February 18, 2011.

With its new attractions, Trelawny is receiving well-deserved notice by tourism interests as it positions itself among the most attractive locations in the very competitive industry.

The past few years have seen the spotlight turn on the parish. Trelawny this year hosted the highly-acclaimed Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival, which unfolded on the grounds of the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Complex.
